In English
The bandWe are a band called Ingen. It's swedish, meaning 'nothing, no one'. We have been indulging in cacophony since 2002. Our skills have improved along the way and what we lack in skill, we make up in wearing stupid costumes while playing live.
The musicWe play music in many styles: punk, rock, waltz (in a twisted sort of way), ethnic, heavy, ballad and then some. We have a rap song too, although it's not published. We aim to play music that is techically good, yet 'something completely different'. Or not.
The guysWe go back a long way, all six of us, and have been doing various projects to this day. Short movies, role playing festivities, websites and so on. At the moment (and propably many moments ahead) it goes like this:
Antto - vocal and percussion
Heikki - drum
Jussi - guitar
Lauri - vocal and flute-thingies
Matti - guitar and keyboard
Samuli - bass
Sometimes we play other instruments as well, but not as well as. Well, maybe sometimes.
Biography(aka When it all started to go wrogn)IN THE BEGINNING (2002)Let's form a band, we thought. So we did. Instruments? Few. Skills? Some. Good ideas? Plenty. We started under the name Euphoria, the band that operated under the idea of having gigs, but making no music. Success? None whatsoever. It did, however, create a spinoff, Ohitusleikkaus (Bypass surgery), that concisted two members, Jussi Hellstén (Hilfred the Nurse) and Lauri Wirtanen (Tohtori Pernaletkaus [Dr. Pernaletkaus. The word 'pernaletkaus' is quite impossible to translate. Perna is spleen and letkaus is an insultive or funny verbal attack, but when put together, they mean something else, something we wish not to think about.] Anyway, Ohitusleikkaus was, luckily for mankind, forgotten before it did anything.
The first time we made music was in a live-action-role-play -event. Hellstén played piano and resited a poem, while Antto Perttola tortured gongas. There are many who think that Ingen will never ever reach to the phenomenal level of this performance (if you think two persons, Hellstén and Perttola, can be considered 'many'). At this point we did not have a name, only a nameling, Maissiaikuiset (Adults of corn). The name Ingen was conceived by Hellstén, Matti Vähätalo and Samuli Suikkanen in 2003. Two of the member also have solo projects of electronic music, Hellstén has noisemaker (acid-noise) and Vähätalo has Vasten (darkwave).
AND SO IT CONTINUES... (2003)A year passed. Hellstén and Vähätalo weaseled their way through military training. For some vile reason, they erected a studio one night, placing it in the yard of Hellstén's home. Played instruments included guitar, kantele (finnish zither), a bucket and something that perhaps resembled a melodica. Recording was done with single mic, a laptop computer and CoolEdit2000. The result was Das Premier, a horrible piece of noise that we are all proud of. Our first album. These two chaps made a second item of music, called Perjantai-ep (The Friday-ep), during some party that was in held in Friday.
LET'S DO ANOTHER ONEIf making an album was that easy, the rest of us wanted to try it. We had organized roleplaying events three times a year since 2000, and when part 8 came along, it brought the opportunity to record something, again. In the heat of the night, hiizi-ep (gozlin-ep) was born. It was mainly punk and included one of the most loved Ingen-songs, Eväsretki (The picnic). We also performed live in the event, playing another song from hiizi-ep, title Keltainen mitta on miehen toimi (Yellow measure is a man's affair). The audience was amused.
NEW GADGETS (2004)We noticed we all had some extra money, so it was time to take a step forward and buy our own instruments. That also led to the point where player-instrument -combinations were decided. They haven't changed much, Samuli used to be band's second drummer and Matti was playing the bass. So, we got our new toys with only a small amount of problems and started training more. Once a month, that is.
HOME, SWEET HOMEThe problem with training was that there was nowhere we could do it. Luckily Heikki Sinkkonen was able to get us a small room in the upstairs of their machinery hall. It was kinda small, but we liked it. Then, quite soon, we found a bigger, more suitable place, so off we went. In the meeting of the website virhe.org (the site is currently down, btw, it will be running again in december) Ingen made it's first real performance, or experience of sound, as we called it. It went well. The intro tape and UV-light are not far away from Tavastia rock-club.
EXPERIENCING BACKFIREBefore any major label managed to contact the band, it's members spreaded all over southern Finland. This means we cannot train so often, but we are keeping things together, training on our own and so on. We were not dead, just sulking. We also had to move back to our original training place. It was big enough to sulk in, though.
IS IT SPRING? AGAIN? (2005)Even if the apostles of cacophony were spreading like anthrax, we had our hopes high about making a demo album. A more traditional album with rehearsed songs and better sound. We had many plans, but we made absolutely nothing. Only one exeption was made, when we recorded some songs for helping us to train on our own and just to have something on tape. New songs are piling up and forming some kind of wholenesses. At the end of the summer four members of the band travelled north to get inspiration for the long discussed Primitiivi-projekti (The Primitive project). We actually recorded four songs, three in ethnic genre and some kind of a pop-song. The whole trip was a great big fun.
TO THE FUTURE-MOBILE!What will happen next? Nothing ground-breaking. Training, gigs (and morons), ideas, 'going-to's, 'let's-not's and maybes. We are having fun with this and other projects. We may not be the best musicians, but we're not the worst one's either and we hope to offer our listeners something unique and fun. Stay tuned, we won't!
The something elseWhen I (or someone else) have/has more time, there will be other stuff in english as well, like discography, maybe even lyrics (what a great way to keep you coming here again and again).
